Chapter 6: The Debt

I turned the phone around and slid it back across the table.

"Answer her," I said.

Dell did not touch it.

"Wyatt," he began.

"Tell her I'm with you," I said. "Tell her I took your money and I'm sleeping on your cot at the lake."

He stared at me.

Then he typed it with one thumb.

*Yes. He's with me. He's staying at the cabin.*

The three dots appeared at once and a new text came back.

*Good. Keep him there.*

I read it twice.

Dell pulled the phone against his chest.

"It's Cassidy," he said. "She's scared of you, brother. She wants to know where you are."

"That's what I figured," I said.

I picked up the envelope and stood.

"I'll see you at the cabin," I said.

I did not intend to go there, and by his face, he knew it.

I left him in the booth with a plate of pie.

Carys Dunning's ranch sat at the end of a gravel road, behind a gate with a sign that said DUNNING STOCK.

It was nine exactly when I walked up her gravel road with the duffel on my shoulder.

She was waiting in the yard with a shovel in each hand.

She threw one at me.

I caught it.

"Up the hill," she said. "Under the cottonwood."

I followed her up the slope behind the house.

At the top, in the long grass, a flatbed truck waited with a tarp on it.

The tarp covered something enormous.

"They dragged him here for me," she said. "The sheriff's office finally returned a call."
