Chapter 9: Hold the Doors

"Say that again where my aunt can hear it," I told Damon.

Rita came out of the kitchen with a soup spoon in her hand.

"I heard him," she said.

Damon pointed at Bianca's notice.

"Chiara manufactured that. I'm taking every record in this building."

Two Rail guards entered behind him.

One had yellow wolf eyes beneath his human face.

The adults at the tables stood between them and the repair room.

"You need a tribunal order," I said.

"I am the Rail Alpha."

"The marriage stay says you cannot seize evidence here."

Damon's guard stepped around a chair.

His fingers lengthened into claws.

A woman pulled her sleeve over an old bite scar and backed toward Rita.

I moved between them.

Silver still burned the mark on my palm, but a hard point pressed beneath my little fingernail again.

I did not know whether it would help me fight.

I knew I would not let him touch her.

Valerio stood by the door with his guards outside.

"Tell me what you want," he said to me.

"Keep your people at the gate. Show Damon the stay."

He held the stamped order where Damon could see it.

"Your collectors know this seal," Valerio said. "Your guards should too."

Damon glanced at his own men.

The guard drew his claws back, but he did not leave.
