Chapter 15: The Cask
I pushed the stopper back in.
"I'm taking this home to him," I said.
Rhys swung his legs off the bed.
He went gray and sat down again hard.
"Not without me."
"You can't stand up."
"Give me till supper."
Greer was already pulling on her boots.
"Stalbridge eats together in the Great Hall on Sundays," she said. "All of them. Every wolf over the river."
I looked at the cask in my arms.
"Then I'll bring the wine."
By dusk Rhys could walk.
He was pale and his hand shook on the banister, but he walked down the stairs and out the door and across the ford on his own feet.
Twenty Kinloch wolves came behind us without being asked.
We came up through the Stalbridge pines in the dark with the cask under my arm and the moonstone glowing on my chest.
The doors of the Great Hall were open.
Long tables ran down the middle of the floor where the aisle had been.
Firelight on the stone, the smell of roast meat and bread, three hundred voices.
They all stopped when I walked in.
