Chapter 16: Safe

We came over the bridge at two in the morning with the lights still off.

June was waiting in the lot in her purple scrubs.

When she saw who was in my arms, she put both hands over her mouth and made a sound.

We put Tansy in the old cat ward behind the kennel room.

It was a small room with a door that locked and no window onto the lot.

I cleaned the burn on her ankle.

Abel hung fluids.

June found her a pair of warm socks and a sweatshirt that said COPPER FALLS LOGGERS FOOTBALL, from her oldest boy.

"It's clean," she said. "Mostly."

Tansy held it against her face.

Tansy asked for her mom.

So June drove to the omega row at four in the morning.

Tansy's mother came over the bridge in her bathrobe and work boots.

She walked straight past the council's order and the dent in the railing.

She came into the cat ward and saw her daughter on the cot.

She knelt very slowly and sobbed against Tansy's hand.

I went out and shut the door.

I sat on an upturned bucket in the kennel room and shook.

Abel sat down on the bucket next to me.

He just put his shoulder against mine and left it there.

In the morning we made a plan.

No sheriff.

Tansy begged.

"The old man said if I ever got away, he'd burn my mom's house with her in it," she said. "He said fire's quick on the row."

Jarek's grandmother came at ten in her Buick.

She sat with Tansy for an hour with the door shut.

When she came out, her eyes were red.

"The council lives in his pocket," she said. "He has three votes. He'll call her a confused child and you a kidnapper."

"Then where?"

"The Hunter's Moon." She leaned on her cane. "On that meadow, any wolf may speak before the whole pack, and no Elder may stop her. It's our oldest law."
