Chapter 27: Hunter's Moon
"Every wolf who crossed the bridge," I said. "June. Her boys. The laundress. The pup's father."
"Every one of them, girl." She looked past me, up the stairs, where Abel was standing in his jeans with his bandaged arm. "Good morning, Doctor Hendry."
The high meadow is a long bowl of yellow grass at the top of the timber land.
We came up the old logging road at a quarter to five.
Four of us walked up from the trucks.
Abel, in his canvas jacket, with his arm in white gauze.
June, in clean purple scrubs with her reading glasses on her head, carrying my bag.
And the grandmother, slow on her cane, with an evidence bag under her other arm.
Halfway up, we passed the gate.
A county cruiser was parked beside it.
The sheriff leaned on his door with a thermos of coffee.
"Doctor," he said. "I was told to wait here for a kidnapper."
"Keep waiting," I said.
We came over the lip of the bowl.
Four hundred wolves turned around.
They stood in a great ring in the yellow grass, in work coats and good sweaters and Sunday dresses, with their pups on their shoulders.
