Chapter 29: Not Your Luna
Four hundred wolves waited for my answer.
The moon was coming up over the eastern ridge, huge and orange.
Somebody had lit the bonfires.
I looked at the grandmother.
At Jarek, bleeding into his borrowed coat.
At the place in the ring where I'd stood alone at the market while everybody else knelt.
"No," I said.
A sound went around the meadow.
"I was Luna for three years," I said. "On paper. In a drawer. Nobody knew, and it didn't help a single pup."
The grandmother didn't look surprised.
"Then what do you want, girl?"
"A hospital."
I turned so the whole ring could hear me.
"My father's clinic on Mill Street. The night clinic across the bridge. One hospital. Open to every wolf in this valley, every rogue who walks in off the highway, and every human who needs a stitch."
"Omegas any day of the week," the laundress called.
People laughed.
Then more of them.
"The trust in my name pays for it," I said. "It always did. You just never had to know."
