Chapter 30: Missoula
His A-frame was dark.
The enforcer's truck was gone from the front.
Tansy and her mother had moved home to the row on Thursday, with half the omegas carrying their bags.
There was nobody there to tell me anything.
I sat in my car in his empty driveway and called June.
"Where is he?"
"Honey, it's Saturday night," June said. "Where does that man go every Sunday?"
I closed my eyes.
Pot roast.
Death certificate.
"I don't know her address."
"The charge nurse at General does," June said. "And she likes you. She says he's been miserable all week, and he's no good to her miserable."
At noon on Sunday I parked on a street of small square houses on the west side of Missoula.
Chain-link fences.
Leaf piles.
A yellow school bus parked in a driveway, retired, with a tarp over the hood.
His old green pickup was behind it.
In the front yard, by the porch steps, stood a brand-new garden gnome.
It had a little fishing rod and a sign around its neck.
REPLACEMENT.
I was still laughing when the front door opened.
