Chapter 4: Lone Wolf

I shut the glass door behind me.

"Say that again."

"She isn't a wolf." He leaned back, and the little chair complained. "Resting pulse seventy-two. Blood pressure of a girl who does yoga. Every lab I ran is boring and human."

"She's an Omega. She came over from a northern pack in May."

"Says who?"

"Says the Alpha."

"Then the Alpha should get his nose checked." He set the beaker down. "She smelled like a coat she borrowed. Wolf on the outside. Nothing underneath. Like when your sister wears your jacket."

"You smelled her."

"I smell everybody. It's a curse."

I looked at him properly.

The gold eyes.

The size of his hands.

That stillness big wolves have when they're trying not to take up room.

Under the coffee and the hospital soap there was something warm and woodsy.

"You're a wolf," I said.

"Keep your voice down. The night pharmacist thinks I'm just hairy."

"Whose pack?"

"Nobody's." He said it the way other people say they don't eat shellfish. "I was a stray. A human family in Missoula took me in when I was four. I shifted for the first time in their backyard at thirteen and ate a garden gnome."

I laughed.

It surprised both of us.

"Lone wolves don't last," I said. "That's what we're taught."

"I'm thirty-four. Ask me how many pack meetings I've been to."

"How many?"

"None. It's been great." He picked up the beaker again. "I came here because the job was open and the rent was cheap. I didn't know the whole valley belonged to a guy in a suit until my first week."

"He doesn't own the hospital."

"No. That's why I like it here."

He pulled Posy's chart closed.

"Now. You want nights."

"I want nights."
