Chapter 24: A Morning at the Keep
I unrolled the vellum on the bed, with Elias propped up on the pillows beside me.
It was a single page in brown ink, in a hand three hundred years dead.
At the top was a name I did not know, the first King of the nine packs.
Under it ran two lines for signatures.
The first line said "The Crown," and someone had signed it, long ago, in a hard slanting scrawl.
The second line said "The one the moon names."
It was empty.
"What does it say?" I asked.
Elias read it with his lips moving, which he did when he was moved and did not want me to see.
"The Crown is not one wolf," he said. "The Crown is two.
When the moon names the second, her name goes here, and the Crown speaks with her voice as much as his own.
Until then, it says, the Crown is only half of itself."
"For three hundred years."
"For three hundred years."
He rolled the page back up and laid it across my knees.
"It's yours to sign. Whenever you like.
Or never."
I looked at the empty line.
"I'll need a pen," I said.
The Keep's breakfast table was full at eight the next morning.
Garrow wolves from the clinic sat beside Keep stewards, and the cook was complaining loudly that a hundred and forty people had eaten every egg in the building.
Junie came down the length of the room with a tray on her hip and her red curls tied up in a cloth.
She set two cups in front of me.
"Orange pekoe," she said. "Go on."
I lifted the cup and smelled it.
It smelled of tea.
