Chapter 15: Eighteen
I was eighteen when my father put a letter in my hands, sealed in grey wax.
"She said you were to carry it to the Stone," he said, and could not meet my eyes. "And read it after."
I tucked it into my satchel under the sprig of betony, and I kissed his cheek.
It was the last time I did.
My stepmother stopped me at the cookhouse door with a cup in her hand.
"Drink, girl. Your hands are shaking."
I drank it because I wanted so badly for it to be kindness.
At the top of the hill the torches burned in a ring, and hundreds of faces glowed above them.
Sabra stood at my shoulder in white, braiding a ribbon into my hair.
"You look lovely," she said. "I mean it. Today I'm going to be so happy for you."
The Moon rose over the ridge.
