Chapter 18: Sabra's Hands
Sabra asked for her trial before the sun was fully up.
She walked into the long hall in a plain grey dress, with her hair braided like a servant's and her chin raised like a queen's.
The pack was already there, because the pack had not slept.
Two of the King's riders stood behind the stepmother's chair at the far wall.
She sat with her hands folded in her lap.
"I invoke the healer's seat," said Sabra.
Her voice rang.
"Rosamund Wrenfield held it for twenty years. It passes by trial of hands, not by blood, and I claim the right to be tried."
"A Luna's rank is a husband's gift," she said. "A healer's rank is mine."
"Neither one is yours," said somebody in the crowd.
Sabra smiled without turning her head.
"Then let the hands decide."
The head elder looked at me.
"Do you answer?"
"I'd rather not," I said. "But I'd rather she couldn't say I hid."
