Chapter 15: The Seat

At nine the next morning, the Saxon boardroom held eight directors and a grandmother.

Odile sat in a straight chair by the windows with her cane across her knees.

She had told me to sit beside her, in plain view, and not behind any plant.

Kieran stood at the head of the table with his hands in his pockets.

Victoria sat on his right in cream silk, and she had brought a folder of her own.

"Before we begin," she said, "I'd like to speak as family."

She stood up and went around the table slowly, touching a chair back here and there.

"My brother is not himself," she said. "He lost the Pacific Reach deal for a woman he has been married to for three years and divorced for six months."

Someone coughed.

"She is suspended from the Thorpe tower as we sit here."

"And my brother walks into a rival's boardroom and offers up this company's chair for her."

She turned her pretty, wounded face to the table.

"I love him. I would do anything for him. But a chief executive who bets the firm on a woman who is under suspicion is a danger to four hundred families."
