Chapter 15: Abel's Debt
Abel Moss was on the farmhouse porch with the shotgun across his knees when the Buick came up the gravel.
Doyle was out of the car before it stopped.
"Does Harlan have lunch with Ray Lowry?" he said.
Abel blinked at him over his glasses.
"Every August. A booth on Hertel Avenue. Since the nineties." He frowned. "Who told you that?"
"Cade showed me a picture. He says it's a trap, and the trap is me."
"It's a truce lunch. They swap a bottle and a handshake and promise not to shoot each other until spring."
"Then what did Harlan sell Lowry at that lunch?"
"I don't know." Abel stood slowly, one hand on the rail. "But I know a man who might say it if you asked him right."
Behind him the kitchen door was open.
Lila sat at the big table in her socks with a box of crayons, drawing a bird with nine legs.
Noelle had followed Doyle in, and she crouched beside the chair and asked how many wings a bird was allowed to have.
"As many as it wants," Lila said, without looking up.
