Chapter 8: The Terms
The ambulance got there first.
By the time the van pulled up outside St. Brendan's emergency entrance, Amos was already behind the doors.
Poppy was in the waiting room with her green dress rumpled and one shoe still off.
Conroy's driver had cranked the platform up by hand.
Conroy came in behind me, and the whole room looked at his chair and then politely looked away.
He did not seem to notice.
It took an hour to see the surgeon.
She came out of the double doors in green scrubs, tired and direct.
"Mr. Lacey has a fractured hip," she said. "It's a clean break, and it's fixable."
She glanced at her chart.
"But there is old damage in his spine. The hip won't heal unless we replace it and stabilize his lower back at the same time."
"How much?" Poppy said.
The surgeon looked at her.
"Do you have insurance?"
"He has a plan that covers a third of anything over the deductible. And a pile of bills that are already in collections."
"Then it's a lot."
"How much?"
"With the rehabilitation, about sixty-two thousand dollars," the surgeon said. "I'm sorry. I can schedule it for Thursday, but the hospital will need a deposit by Tuesday."
She went back through the doors.
Poppy sat down on the plastic chair and put her face in her hands.
"I have eleven hundred dollars in the bank," she said through her fingers. "And a job I'm supposed to start tomorrow at the place that did this."
"The place didn't do this," I said.
"Didn't it?"
I sat beside her.
"I have forty-one thousand in the card I gave Dad," I said. "We use it for the bills first. Then the deposit. We'll find the rest."
