Chapter 15: Not in Your Kitchen

Marin picked up the phone and held it to her ear without speaking.

"Think it over, Miss Ashdown," Lawrence said. "I'll wait for your call."

She ended it with her thumb.

The kitchen was very quiet.

"You're going to take it," I said.

"I don't know."

"I wouldn't blame you."

"Don't." Her voice was sharp. "Don't be understanding at me. I can't stand it tonight."

I put my good hand flat on the counter and waited.

She walked to the window and stood with her back to me, looking out at the harbor.

"I've lain awake for a week trying to hate Sabine," she said. "She wrote that note at twenty-three, and she was bored, and she wanted a necklace. And I can't do it. She's too small to hate."

"Then who?"

"You."

I didn't move.

"Not for the note," Marin said. "I know you didn't write it. I know you didn't know. I watched your face in this room."

"Then why?"

"Because you put an enormous amount of money in a man's hands and you never looked at what he did with it."

"For years."

"My father had a stroke in March, Weston, and I think about the sale every day, and the money that bought it was yours."

"I know that."

"I know you know. That's why I can't leave it alone."

She turned around.

Her eyes were dry, and she was shaking a little in the shoulders.

"I thought if I got in bed with you it would go away. It didn't. It got worse. Every time you touch me I think, he didn't read it."
