Chapter 19: Who Comes

Marin's POV

It was the twenty-third of April, and I was standing in a maternity waiting room I had no business being in.

Six months had gone by since I walked out of his kitchen.

I had not called him, and he had not called me.

That was what I'd asked for, and he'd done it so exactly that it made me furious.

I knew the rest from the papers.

Lawrence Thorpe had sold the last of his cars.

He was working for a cousin's insurance office in Worcester.

His wife was staying with her sister in Florida, and she sent his letters back unopened.

Cabot Capital had folded Harbor Lane into its own books.

My father's name was back on the door of a closed office on State Street.

I had walked past it twice, and I had not gone in.

At nine that morning Rex Brannigan had texted me, which he had never done before.

It said: Sabine's in labor at Mass General, right on her due date. Weston isn't answering. Thought you should know.

I had no reason to go.

I took a cab anyway, and I told myself I only wanted to see who else would come.

Rex was there.

He sat on a plastic chair in a Cabot Capital security jacket.
