Chapter 21: She's My Sister

Lexi's hand went cold in mine.

"Tonight?" she said. "He's in handcuffs."

"His attorney filed an emergency petition this morning," the woman said, and she did look sorry. "Until a judge hears it, a minor in a contested situation goes to the nearest guardian of record."

"Who is that?"

The woman checked her clipboard.

"Mrs. Thornquist."

Everyone in the room turned to Mrs. Thornquist.

She stood very straight beside the glass table, in her black suit, with the cameras still in the doorway.

"I'm the wife of the man they just arrested," she said. "I have lied to this girl, as well. I would not choose me."

"Ma'am, the court will decide that."

"Then the court can ask Lexi."

Lexi's fingers tightened around mine.

"Where would I go if I said no?" she asked.

"A temporary placement. A foster home, probably, until the hearing."

"Does it have to be a stranger?"

The woman hesitated.

"If a relative of the child steps forward, and passes a home visit tonight, the court can consider it."

"I'm not a relative," Lexi said, in a small voice. "I'm not related to anybody here."

"You are to me," I said.

I said it loudly, so that it carried to the doorway, where a young man with a camera lifted his lens.

I did not care.

I stepped forward, in my one decent blouse, and the woman looked me over.

"She's my sister," I said.
