Chapter 14: The Women of Ward C
My grandmother argued with me all the way down the courthouse stairs.
She lost at the bottom.
"Then you'll go in dressed," she said, and sent Matthew to the car.
He came back with a garment bag.
Jeans. A gray sweater. Wool socks. A navy peacoat with the tags still on.
"I guessed the size," Matthew said.
"You guessed small."
"You were small."
When I came out my grandmother was holding something in her palm.
A steel diver's watch on a worn leather strap.
My father's.
"I kept it wound," she said. "Every Sunday. In case."
She buckled it on my wrist herself, on the last hole, and it still slid.
At eight o'clock the car turned in at the iron gate of Halcyon House.
The gate stood wide open.
Behind us came a dark sedan with a state police detective in it, and two marked cars behind him.
The detective was a heavy, tired man with a warrant in his inside pocket.
By six he'd had a judge sign everything my grandmother's attorney put in front of him.
The attorney rode with me. She had a stack of release orders on her knee.
