Chapter 17: Alicia's Video

"What video?" I said.

"She won't say. She's asked for it to be played in court."

"When?"

"Monday, nine a.m. Same judge."

I looked out the car window at my own house.

The neighbor with the rake was still standing there.

"Good," I said. "I'd like to see it too."

Courtroom 3 looked different on Monday.

Or I did.

I walked in on my own feet, in a navy dress my grandmother had bought me, with my father's watch on my wrist.

My grandmother's attorney walked beside me with her folder.

Matthew sat in the second row, behind me, close enough that I could hear him breathe.

Alicia sat at the other table alone.

Stewart was in a county cell, waiting on a bail hearing.

She'd filed as the girls' godmother, a "concerned party with a long relationship to the children."

She'd had her hair done.

Camel coat. Pearl studs. Perfect red mouth.

When I sat down, she looked across at me and gave me the small, sad smile she used at funerals.

"Del," she mouthed. "Honey."

The judge came in, sat down, and put on her glasses.

"Ms. Dunford," she said. "This is your motion. Go ahead."
