Chapter 24: Room 14
I bought Halcyon House on the last day of March.
The developer's lawyer was at the table when I walked in.
He slid his drawings of a rooftop pool across to the owners' side and smiled at me.
I put one sheet of paper on top of his drawings.
The owners' lawyer read the number on it twice.
The developer's lawyer read it once, and started rolling up his drawings.
"Who are you with?" he asked me at the door.
"Myself," I said.
It took six weeks to take the locks off.
Every lock on every door. The bolts on the ward. The bars on the second-floor windows.
The orderly stood in the front hall with her clipboard and checked each one off as it came out.
"Forty-one," she said, when the last one went into the bin. "Forty-one locks."
The girl had moved into the old receptionist's office to do the foundation's books, in pen.
The professor's wife had taken the psychiatrist's office.
She'd thrown out the leather chairs and put in a long lab bench and a sign on the door. TESTING. KNOCK FIRST.
