Chapter 4: Elliot's Terms

Elliot poured me a cup of tea and slid it across the table.

"Sit," he said. "You've had a long two days."

"I've had a long three years."

"Yes," he said. "I know. I told you so at the time."

I took the chair across from him and did not answer that.

Aunt Bea put a plate of toast between us, looked at both our faces, and said she was going to water the plants.

She did not own any plants.

"She likes you," I said, once the back door had closed.

"She gave me a key to her house on Wednesday night after two minutes on the phone."

He picked up his cup.

"I think she likes anyone who is angry at Colton."

"Are you angry at Colton?"

"I have been angry at Colton for two years."

He said it plainly, with no heat in it.

Elliot had been the one person at my grandmother's funeral who did not tell me she was in a better place.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"Because you stopped the first-of-the-month transfer, and I have been waiting three years for you to do that."

"I paused it. I didn't cancel it."

"Good. Don't cancel it yet." He set the cup down. "It has more use as a threat."

"Elliot."

"Colton has a dinner tomorrow night. Marlow's, private room, eight o'clock."

He took a folded card out of his jacket and laid it by my plate.

"The lead investor of his new round will be there, with two partners from her fund."
