Chapter 24: The Check

I didn't wake him.

I lay there in the dark with the phone on my chest until the screen went black, and then I lay there some more.

At six he opened his eyes and found me already looking at him.

"You slept," I said.

"I slept." He sounded surprised about it. "What's wrong?"

I turned the phone around.

He put his reading glasses on to read it. Then he took them off and read it again without them.

"Sixty thousand one hundred forty," he said.

"I'm a hundred and forty dollars richer than free."

He didn't say congratulations. He didn't say he was proud of me.

He put his hand over his face, and his shoulders shook once, and when he took it away his eyes were wet.

"Don't," I said. "You'll make me start."

"Too late," he said, and I was.

Marlee called at six fifteen, screaming before I'd said hello.

"I saw it! I set an alert on your payouts! Don't ask me how!"

"How?"

"I said don't ask!" Something crashed in Lettie's kitchen. "Lettie's up. Lettie's crying into the coffee maker. Get down here."
