Chapter 32: Next October
The next October, Lettie moved the First Barrel release to Forrest's birthday.
"He's forty-eight," she told the whole diner. "He might not make forty-nine. Let him have a party."
That Saturday morning I walked down Main Street for coffee at seven, the way I did most mornings now.
The gold letters on the bank window caught the sun.

Somebody had stuck a sticky note in the corner of the glass, from the inside, in Marlee's terrible handwriting.
Crooked ampersand. Do not fix.
Through the window I could see the little red light over the vault door.
Above it hung the iron grate, black and shining.
Angel's Share was on its third season. The barge captain had finally come up the river.
Night Shift at the Rickhouse was on its fourth, and Lettie had a fan club in Ohio that sent her dollar bills in the mail.
Marlee had two engineers working under her, including the breath editor from Nashville, and a third booth upstairs where her claw-foot tub used to be.
