Chapter 13: Inside
I stared at the letter with the whole queue reading it over my shoulder.
Then I peeled it off the plywood, one corner at a time.
"Hol," Kirsty said. "That's a legal thing. You can't just..."
"It's taped to my window."
I folded it and put it in my apron pocket, next to the notice to quit.
My apron was getting very full of Arkady Sokolov.
A woman in the queue with a pushchair said, "So is it off? Friday?"
Everyone waited.
I looked down the parade.
The empty shops, whitewashed again. The pavement, swept clean of glass. The festoon lights still strung overhead, dead.
"It says no market on his pavement," I said. "Or in his empty shops."
"So it's off."
"It says nothing about my shop."
That afternoon Kirsty's nan read the letter at her counter with her glasses on the end of her nose.
"My lease says I can open till ten," she said. "It's said that since 1987."
The key-cutter said his lease didn't say anything about closing at all, because nobody in 1974 had thought he'd want to.
