The invoice had the surveyor's firm on it, and the firm had an address.
It wasn't an office.
It was a house in a village outside Sevenoaks.
"He works from home," Lev said, reading it on my phone at the kitchen table at midnight. "He always told my father he liked to be near his roses."
"You've met him."
"Twice. At my father's place outside Moscow. He drank too much and talked about greenfly."
"Will he remember you?"
"He'll remember my surname."
On Saturday I closed the shop at two.
Kirsty threw me the keys to her little red car across the counter.
"Bring it back with petrol in it," she said. "And bring me back a confession."
Lev drove.
He drove the way he did everything now, carefully and too fast, with one hand on my knee at every red light.
Freddie's photo was on my phone. Dad's door footage was on Mum's old laptop on the back seat.
By four we were in a lane with high hedges and a sign that said "Slow, ducks".
