Chapter 19: Arlene
"Glenn?" I said. "Mom, Glenn didn't take that picture."
"Open it again," she said.
She pushed the laptop across the table to me.
I opened it.
The photo came back up, my window, my father's chair, the two of us against the glass.
"Where was the camera?" my mother said.
I knew.
I'd known since the second I saw it, and I hadn't let myself think it through.
High up, across the street, looking down.
"Brine's roof," I said.
"Glenn's restaurant," my mother said.
She stood up and tied her cardigan shut.
Then she walked out onto her own porch, and I followed her.
Glenn was still at the top of the steps.
Barrett was still in the grass.
My mother stopped between them in her nightgown, five foot two, with her glasses swinging on their chain.
"Glenn. Sit down."
He'd been shouting for twenty minutes.
He sat down in the rocking chair like a kid sent to the office.
