Chapter 22: The Group Chat
I let him in.
He stood just inside my back door.
Barrett turned off the water behind me and didn't come closer.
"Why are you here?" I said.
"Because yesterday he called the kitchen leads into the office," Dane's sous chef said.
"He said his lawyer needs statements. Everybody in his group chat signs one saying the walkout was your cooks' idea."
"And you won't."
"I'm not lying under oath for him." He rubbed his burned arm. "And he cut our tip share to pay the lawyer."
He handed me the phone.
The chat was called BRINE LEADERSHIP.
Four people in it. Dane, his general manager, the bar manager, and the kid standing in my kitchen.
He'd scrolled it back to May.
May 28, Dane: "Low Tide's whole line walks Friday the 5th. All three. +8 an hour. They walk at 4, not before."
The general manager: "What if she cancels service?"
Dane: "She won't. She's too proud. She'll cook it alone. That's the point."
June 1, Dane: "Sent Cold Plate's editor a love note. Friday the 5th. Ask for the scallops."
