Chapter 15: The Founders' Dinner
By seven o'clock the dining room had grown two extra tables and forty chairs.
Candles stood down the middle in tall brass sticks, and the cousins filled the room in dark clothes, murmuring.
I had read the page once, in the pantry, with the door shut and my hand over my mouth.
Now it lay folded flat inside my cardigan, against my ribs, next to my mother's note.
The housekeeper had brushed my hair and buttoned me into a navy dress.
She had fed me a bowl of soup behind the pantry door, because the heir fasts before a feast.
My seat was at my grandmother's right hand, on a cushion, with an empty plate before it.
Marguerite sat at the head in black wool.
The House Book lay open in front of her, its bronze corners shining.
A gold chain hung round her neck, and on it hung my grandfather's ring.
Joanna sat at her left, smiling at the cousins, a pearl in every ear.
