Chapter 18: Joanna Leaves
Nobody spoke for a long moment.
Then the whole table did, all at once, and the sound was like a wave breaking on stone.
"Order," said the great-aunt, and the wave sank.
At the left hand of the head of the table, Joanna had begun to rise.
"I will just see to the nursery," she said, with a light, bright smile.
"Sit down, Joanna," I said.
I said it from the chair, in the voice from the throne room.
She sat.
It was the first order she had ever obeyed from me.
"Great-aunt," I said. "One thing more, before anyone leaves."
"The papers are in the trust lawyer's briefcase, and my father signed every one."
The thin man in the corner clutched the handle of his case to his chest.
"Those documents are confidential," he said.
"Open it," said the uncle with the hearing aid.
He had been a county judge for thirty years.
The lawyer opened the case.
Three bound agreements slid across the cloth to the great-aunt.
"Father," I said. "There is a pen by your plate, and a card with your name on it."
