Chapter 19: The Matriarch's Chair
The great-aunt folded her hands over the Book's last leaf and looked up the table.
"Head of the house," she said. "By what right?"
"By the proxy, the seal and forty years in this chair," said Marguerite. "By right of the Rules themselves."
"The Rules say the head is the eldest of the blood who keeps his reason."
"You have held the chair for my brother, because he could not."
"Can he?"
"He cannot," said Marguerite. "He is sedated, and ill."
"By whom?" said the uncle.
He spread his hand over the slips on the cloth.
No one answered.
Then the double doors at the end of the room opened, and the draft made all forty candles lean.
My grandfather stood in the doorway.
He wore a dark suit that had hung in a closet for two years, and it hung from his shoulders as from a peg.
He held the housekeeper's arm in one hand and a cane from the hall stand in the other.
His eyes were clear.
