Chapter 21: The Council
"Don't let go," the physician said, and she put her hands over mine.
She had come out of the dark with two orderlies and a stretcher, still in her gray suit, with snow in her hair.
"Pressure here. Harder."
I pushed down until the wool went hot under my palms.
"He's losing too much," I said.
"He is losing what he can spare." She was cutting the sweater open with shears. "The bullet went through. Under the ribs, nothing vital. A hand's width to the left and I would not be speaking to you."
Eli stood in the snow with his arms around himself.
"Is Tristan dead?" he asked.
"No," the physician said. "He is being very stupid and very lucky."
On the stretcher, Tristan opened one eye.
"Heard that," he said.
I laughed, and it came out a sob.
By morning he was propped on pillows in the tower, gray and stitched, and Eli had fallen asleep across the foot of the bed with the dinosaur backpack on his chest.
