Chapter 5: Her Choice

I walked out onto the porch in the sweater and nothing else.

Tristan turned around with the phone still at his ear.

He said, "I'll call you back," and put it in his pocket.

"Who was that?" I asked.

"My family."

"You said the king."

He didn't flinch.

"My uncle," he said. "We call him that at home, because he thinks he runs everyone's life. He wanted to know if I'd found a place to stay."

"And Eli?"

"My driver drove past your house twice tonight. The lights are out. The neighbour's car is in the drive, and your brother's window has a night-light on." He took a breath. "I wasn't going to wake you with it until morning."

My knees went soft.

Nobody had ever checked on Eli for me.

I crossed the porch boards and put both hands flat on his chest.

"Thank you," I said.

"You don't have to thank me."

"Then stop talking," I said, and I pulled him down by his shirt.

He kissed me.

His mouth was hot and hungry, and his hands went to my hips and lifted me against him.

I hooked my leg around the back of his thigh.

I could feel exactly how much he wanted this through his jeans.

It made me dizzy.

"Inside," he said against my lips.

"Now."

He carried me in, kicked the door shut, and put me down on the bed.

I did not wait for him.

I pulled his shirt up over his head and threw it.

I saw all of him in the dim orange light, broad through the chest, with a long pale scar curving across his ribs.

I put my mouth on it.

He breathed in sharply through his teeth, and his hand tightened in my hair.

I worked my way down his stomach, kissing, tasting salt and rain, and I unbuttoned his jeans.

"Delaney."

"I've never done this on purpose," I said. "I've only ever done it because someone wanted something. Let me want it."

His eyes closed.
