Chapter 10: The South Pass
I was dressed and running before the second horn finished.
Torin ran beside me with his boots in his hand and his shirt hanging open, and he did not slow down for me.
He did not need to.
I kept up.
All along the lane, doors were opening.
Women came out of the small houses with their sleeves rolled and their hair tied back, some with kitchen knives, some with garden hoes, and a thin one with a hunting rifle across her shoulders.
My mother was among them in her blue kerchief.
She had a pitchfork.
"Go back to the cottage," she said to me, without stopping.
"No."
"Wynn."
"I'm not leaving you at a gate with a pitchfork, Mom."
She looked at me, and for a moment I saw the woman who had once told my father to get out of the kitchen.
"Then stay behind me," she said.
I did not.
The south pass was a gap between two cliffs, wide enough for one truck.
Torin's guard had already built a barricade across it, a low wall of stacked stones and a tipped cart.
The captain with the gray braid stood on top of it with a rifle.
On the other side, at the mouth of the pass, stood forty wolves in human skin.
They were Pinebrook's best, the enforcers and the trackers, big men in wool coats with their breath smoking.
I knew most of their faces.
I had cooked their breakfasts for six years.
In front of them stood Theron Stroud, with a white handkerchief tied to his walking stick and a gray-haired woman at his elbow.
