Chapter 22: The Second Vial

Livia's POV

I said I do to Lorenzo at noon in San Rocco, in front of two hundred people.

At four the reception began under white tents in the garden above the harbor.

The lilies were everywhere.

We had kept the florist's order on purpose, because Lorenzo wanted to see my mother walk in.

Every guard on the grounds had her description.

Every waiter had been checked by hand.

I wore my grandmother's pearls, which my mother had never been allowed to touch.

Ilaria sat beside me at the head table in dark green silk.

She had her face turned toward the crowd, and her good eye moving slowly over it.

"I can see the tent," she said. "A white blur. And people, like moving ink."

"Can you see me?"

"A pale shape with a very straight back." She smiled. "The dress is the color of milk."

Lorenzo stood to give the toast.

He raised his glass, and the whole garden went quiet.

"To my wife," he said.

That was all.

The tent roared.

A waiter in a grey apron came along the head table with a tray of champagne flutes.

Her head was down and her cap was pulled low.

I did not look at her.

I was looking at my husband.

"Livia," Ilaria said.

"Mmm."

"The waiter."

"What about her?"

"She has her back to us now." Ilaria's voice had gone very quiet. "She's stopped at the end table, where no one's sitting. She has her hand over the last glass."
