Chapter 6: It Will Be Over Soon

Lorenzo let me call home that night, on speaker, with him sitting across the desk.

"Ten minutes," he said. "You speak, I listen."

My mother answered on the second ring.

"Livia, my baby." Donata Santoro's voice was warm and wet, the voice that had sung me to sleep. "Are you eating? Are they feeding you?"

"I'm eating, Mama."

"Is he kind to you?"

I looked at Lorenzo.

He looked at the wall.

"He's careful," I said.

"Careful is good. Careful means he wants something from you." She sighed into the phone. "We'll see you tomorrow. Paolo is ironing his good shirt. Fiorella has been crying all day."

"I bet she has."

A pause.

"What does that mean?"

"Nothing," I said. "I'm tired."

I had a hundred sentences in my mouth.

Why did you touch her back.

Why did you nod.

Why do you sound so happy.

I swallowed every one of them, because Lorenzo was ten feet away, and because I wanted to hear her say it herself.

"Tomorrow wear your father's favorite dress," my mother said. "The black one. Smile at the Don, Livia. Let him see what a good girl you are."

"Mama."

"And whatever happens at that table," she said, softly, "don't be afraid. It will be over soon."

She hung up.

The study was silent.

Lorenzo set his glass down on the desk.

It was a good glass, heavy crystal, and he set it down so slowly that I knew he was angry.
