Chapter 20: Friday Noon
At eleven forty the bar was covered in cashier's checks.
They lay in rows on the black wood, in white envelopes and bank folders.
Some of the amounts had been written by hand on the backs of menus.
The bank manager sat on a stool with an adding machine borrowed from Lorna's office and a pencil behind her ear.
She had not looked up in an hour.
Nolan stood at her shoulder, because a man with a hundred thousand dollars on a napkin had asked him to.
"Don't sneeze," said the bank manager.
The adding machine chattered.
She tore off the tape, ran her finger down it, and read the number twice.
"Fourteen million, thirty-one thousand, two hundred and six dollars, forty-four cents."
"The payoff letter says fourteen million, thirty-one thousand, two hundred and six dollars, forty-four cents."
She put down the pencil.
"We're over by sixty dollars."
Someone in the hall began to clap.
It spread, ragged, then loud, a hundred and forty adults in coats clapping in a dim brick room at noon on a Friday.
