She was sixty-three years old and five feet tall, and when she raised her chin a hundred and forty people stopped breathing.
"My name is not important tonight," she said.
"What happened to me is.
"I'll say it once, and then I'll sit down."
Cliff took a step toward her.
Ford moved a pace.
He did not touch Cliff, but Cliff stopped.
"Nearly three years ago," said the judge, "I was a member of this club.
"A man I had had dinner with twice put his hand on me in the back hall.
"I said stop.
"I said it again.
"He did not."
Her voice did not shake.
"I'm telling you because he is about to tell you I was mistaken.
"He has told it to himself so often he believes it.
"I was not mistaken.
"I was a judge for thirty years, and I know the sound of a man deciding a no doesn't count."
She turned her head, and looked at Cliff.
