Chapter 18: What the Title Cost
The lawyer was waiting in the hallway when I opened the door in yesterday's pants.
He was young, with a good haircut and a leather case, and he had the grace not to look past me into the apartment.
"Mr. Lowell. I tried your office and your home."
"How did you find this address?"
"Your phone," he said pleasantly. "Mr. MacAvoy asks that you come to your office at nine. I'll meet you there with the documents."
He left.
Ines was dressed by the time I turned around, in slacks and a gray cardigan, her hair pinned.
She didn't say anything about the night.
She handed me a clean shirt still in its store fold, in my size.
"Go on," she said. "I'll follow in my car."
The conference room on the fourth floor was cold at nine.
The lawyer sat on one side of the table with two stacks of paper in front of him.
Ben took the chair beside me, and Ines sat by the wall with her notebook.
"I'll be brief," the lawyer said. "Corwin's agreement with the trustee closes Monday at ten. Mr. MacAvoy has authorized me to offer you something in advance of that."
"I'm listening."
"Monday morning, the first action of the new ownership will be a reorganization. We have a list. Forty positions."
The room went still.
He slid a sheet across the table.
I did not look at it.
I looked at Ines, who had stopped writing.
She had hired most of those forty.
"Mr. MacAvoy would rather not do that," the lawyer said. "He has no quarrel with the staff. If you resign as chief executive today, effective at closing, he'll put in writing that there will be no layoffs for twelve months."
