Chapter 19: His Father's Token

The black door stood open when they came down from the ridge.

It had swung inward on its own, and warm lamplight lay across the corridor floor.

Lu Baichuan stopped on the threshold with the red tag still burning in his fist.

"Go on," Qin Heyan said, behind him.

"You first."

"It's your father's door."

Lu went in.

It was a small plain room with a low desk, a reed mat and one shelf.

On the desk lay a folded letter, weighted by a jade seal.

The paper was brown with age at the edges, and the brush strokes on it were stiff and square.

Lu picked it up and read it standing.

Qin watched his face.

At first it was blank.

Then his mouth began to shake.

"Read it to me," Qin said, gently. "If you can."

Lu cleared his throat.

"My son. If you are reading this, the Pearl has cracked, and I did not know how to tell you before it did."

He swallowed.

"I set it in you at twelve because the Court said it was an honor. I was proud. I have been sorry every day since."

A tear ran down his nose and dripped on the page.

He went on in a rough voice.

"Gong Yue will have told you about the hundred days. She is a good woman."

"But she does not know the other way, because I kept it from the Court. Nobody else would permit it."

"Another way," Qin said.
