Chapter 8: The Guardian
They fought it in their trousers, with no time for boots.
Qin Heyan snatched Hoarfrost off the table as the front wall of the pavilion exploded inward.
A stone fist the size of a bull came through the doorframe.
Lu Baichuan caught his saber from the rack, rolled across the floor, and came up laughing.
"Hello, big fellow."
"Don't talk to it," Qin snapped.
"It has a nice face."
"It has no face."
The guardian stepped through the broken wall.
It stood so tall that its head scraped the ceiling beams.
Its eyes were two holes in worn grey stone, and from them came a slow, heavy hum.
It swung.
Qin leaped.
The fist broke the floor where he had been, and the boards flew up in splinters.
He landed on a beam, cut at the thing's wrist with Hoarfrost, and the blade rang off the rock without a mark.
"Stone," he called. "Blades won't do it."
"Cold and hot," Lu said. "Same as the tablet. Together."
"I know."
"You freeze. I'll burn."
"Ice first, then fire, you fool. Not together."
"Then give me a gap."
Qin dropped from the beam.
He slammed Hoarfrost into the stone man's knee and let frost-qi run down the blade.
White crystals raced up the thigh and locked the joint.
The guardian lurched.
"Now!"
Lu's saber came out of the dark.
He drove it into the frozen knee with a roar, and ember-qi poured into the ice.
The stone cracked.
The guardian tipped, one leg shattering, and its other fist swung down in a wide arc.
