Chapter 9: The Quiet Day
On the twelfth day, Qin Heyan decided to cook.
"You can't cook," Lu Baichuan said from the bench, one arm wrapped around his ribs.
"I can read."
"There's a difference."
"Sit still."
The Garden's kitchen was a big warm room off the pavilion's side.
It had a clay stove, a rack of copper pans, and shelves piled high with food.
Every jar was full.
Every day the jars were full again.
Qin found a cookbook in a crooked brush hand.
Under it lay a half-eaten bowl of chili oil and a knife with a worn red handle.
"Whose is this?" he asked.
"Mine, probably." Lu shrugged. "The Garden pulls from my memory. My old kitchen at Ember Court."
"The Garden is a thief."
"It's a generous thief."
Qin chopped scallions with great precision.
He did not say what he was thinking, which was that the knife was sized for a boy's hand.
He put it down.
"Take your shirt off," he said.
