Chapter 9: Bachelor Night

On Friday night Trent sent me a text that said: "One last night out, cousin. No hard feelings. Bring your bride, I'll behave."

I read it twice at the kitchen table.

"He wants me where he can watch me," I told my father.

"Then don't go," my father said.

"Edmund asked me not to push him away yet," I said. "If I vanish, he'll know I know."

I did not say that I also wanted to see how far he would go in a room full of people.

Cosima put down her tea. "Then I'll come with you."

"It's a loud club."

"I've been in loud places before," she said. "I don't want to sit in a quiet house and wait."

The club was a long mirrored room above the river, with a bar down one side and booths along the other.

Cosima sat in the car outside with one of Edmund's guards, and I told her I would come out in an hour.

Inside, twenty of our old classmates cheered when I walked in.

Trent had arranged everything.

He stood at the bar in a pale gray shirt with his sleeves rolled, and Tiffany sat next to him in a red dress with her arms crossed.

"The groom!" Trent shouted, and he raised both arms.

The room cheered again.

He pushed a heavy glass into my hand.

It was filled to the brim with amber liquid, and it smelled of smoke.

"Come on," he said, loud enough for the whole bar. "A toast to a man who finally got what he wanted."

I held the glass at arm's length.

"You know I can't drink this," I said.

"One sip, Perry. It's your wedding."

"You know what alcohol does to me."

"Oh, come on," Trent said, and he laughed, and a few people laughed with him. "You were fine at fourteen. You're a grown man now. You're afraid of a little whiskey?"
