Chapter 12: The Back Seat

"She's right not to believe us," I said that night.

Heath sat on the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees.

He had called Joelle's phone a dozen times that day.

It rang through to voicemail every time.

"We're the two people in the world with a reason to say it," I said. "Bridget made sure of that. If I were Joelle, I wouldn't believe either of us."

"Then what do we do?"

"We find someone with no reason at all."

He lifted his head.

"Was anyone else in the truck?" I asked.

"No."

"Heath."

"No, I..." He stopped.

I watched his face change.

"There was a boy in the back," he said slowly. "He was asleep on the bench seat behind me. A kid from chemistry, I couldn't even tell you his name. He'd been sick behind the boathouse and Bridget said he could ride with us. He was out cold the whole way."

"Where did he go after?"

"I don't know. Eugene sent him home before the ambulance came. I never saw him again. I'd forgotten him for ten years."

"Then he's the one."

I took my phone off the nightstand and opened the Larkfield High class chat.

It was still lit with the gala story, a hundred and forty comments, most of them heart eyes aimed at Bridget.

I typed for a long time.

I deleted it twice.

Then I wrote the simplest thing I could.

"Quick question for anyone who was at Pike's Landing the night of the lake party, ten years ago. Did anybody ride in the back seat of Heath's truck? I'm trying to find them. It's important and it's private."

I hit send before I could be sensible.
