Chapter 23: The Drive Home
The old truck shook when Heath started it.
He gripped the wheel with both hands, and his knuckles went white in the dashboard light.
He took the first mile at twenty miles an hour.
I sat in the passenger seat with my feet up on the dash, the way I never did in my own car, and said nothing.
I watched his face instead.
At the end of the second mile his shoulders came down.
At the end of the third, he laughed once, low.
"There are no streetlights on this whole road," he said.
"There aren't."
"I'm still alive."
"You are."
"I thought I'd feel it more."
"Feel what?"
"Her." He swallowed. "The girl in the road. I thought the dark would give her back to me."
"She's home, Heath. She's on Elm Street with a cane and a purple couch and her own phone."
"She made you a birthday cake."
"It was a box mix, and she set the oven on fire."
He laughed again, harder, and wiped his eye with his wrist.
We drove into the Garrison gates at a quarter to one.
The house was dark except for the porch light.
He parked the truck in front of the carriage house and sat there with the engine ticking.
