Chapter 15: Frank's Pulpit
Frank found me in the vestibule while Caleb was on the phone with the hospital.
"A word," he said. "Alone."
He didn't wait for me to answer.
He walked into the sanctuary, and after a moment I followed.
It was empty at six o'clock, lit only by the Christmas tree and the red exit signs.
Dark pews, a wooden cross, a carpet that Hazel had vacuumed every week for nineteen years.
Frank walked all the way up the center aisle and stopped at the pulpit.
He put both hands on the sloped wood and looked out at the empty rows.
"This is where I said it," he said. "The Sunday after he left."
"What did you say?"
"That no son of mine would sit in this house again." He looked down at his hands. "Three hundred people said amen."
