Chapter 17: Basket Night Eve
"I promised not to call anyone for you," I said. "I called for them."
Caleb stared at the phone, and then at me, with his jeans still around his knees.
"The drivers aren't a lawyer," I said. "They're groceries on wheels."
"Nina, I wasn't going to reveal myself until supper."
"Tomorrow is supper. The service is at seven, and you wanted one night where they see you."
He was quiet for a long time, and the windshield slowly fogged again.
"They stay in Ohio," he finally said. "Till I say my name in that church."
"That's all I wanted."
"And if I never say it?"
"Then they eat a lot of drive-thru and go home," I said.
He laughed so hard the truck rocked.

It was Thursday, Christmas Eve, and the shop was packed with people redeeming guitars.
The man behind the glass turned the watch over under a lamp.
