Chapter 23: The Real Ceremony
On Saturday at four we got married in the test kitchen, and nobody gave a speech they had been handed.
We had gone to the Evanston clerk on Friday, together, in person, with our real driver's licenses.
The clerk had checked both photographs twice and then smiled at us.
I wore a cream dress with no train, my mother's gray blazer thrown over it, and my hair as it falls.
Gavin wore a dark suit and no tie, and his collar stood open.
There were seven chairs.
The dairy farmer sat in the front with his wife, in the brown suit, holding a jar of honey.
The housekeeper who points down hallways had come in a good hat.
The board chair sat at the end of the row, elderly and straight-backed, and she was the one with the license in her hand.
Gavin's mother sat beside her.
She was a small, dark-haired woman.
At the door she looked at me for a very long time.
"You are the one with the recall chart," she said.
"Yes."
"Good. He has needed somebody who corrects him since he was nine."
She kissed both my cheeks.
