Chapter 10: Don't Make Him Choose

I came down the ladder with my sweater on backwards.

My father stood on the gravel with a flashlight pointed at the ground.

Gabe stayed up in the boat with the hatch shut.

"Walk with me," my father said.

We went out along the dock, past the dark rows of covered boats, our footsteps loud on the planks.

The lake was black and the wind had dropped.

He stopped at the end and stood looking at the water with the flashlight off.

For a long time he said nothing.

"Say it," I said. "Please. Whatever you're going to say."

"I'm trying to think how your mother would put it."

"She'd have yelled."

"She would. Then she'd have made you a sandwich." He gave a short laugh and wiped his mustache. "I'm no good at this."

"Dad."

"I'm not blind, Vic-Vic. I wasn't blind four years ago, either."

"Then you know why you asked him."

"I asked him because I knew what you'd do." He turned and looked at me. "You've never once taken no from anybody. If I'd told you to leave it alone, you'd have taken it as a dare."

"That's not fair."

"It's true."

"Is that why? Because you're afraid I'll go after him?"

"No."

"Is it the age?"

"It's some of the age."

"What's the rest?"

He shook his head.

"Don't make him choose," he said quietly. "Whatever's coming, don't make him pick between you and me."

"Why would he have to pick?"

"Because he's a man who keeps his word. And he gave it."
