Chapter 16: What We Tell the Boy
"No," said Gyeong-wook.
The hall went so quiet that Ye-han heard a lantern hiss.
"He is a disciple of this house, and he is hurt.
"He stays under my roof, and my physician sees to him."
"A guest is not a prisoner, Leader," Ma said gently.
"I only offer a bed and a feast."
"Then you may feast in this hall, where he will be seated at my table."
Ma looked at him for a long, warm moment.
"Of course," he said.
"The elders may ask what they like of me tomorrow."
He went back to his cushion and took up his cup.
The Hall Elder gave Ye-han one thin smile across the room.
Ye-han did not like that smile at all.
Ju-won ate nothing for the rest of the dinner.
He sat at the Leader's table with his hands in his lap, and Gyeong-wook did not leave his side.
After midnight, with two of the Leader's own disciples guarding the corridor, Ye-han took Ju-won down to the lake pavilion.
It stood on pilings over the black water at the end of a plank walkway.
It was open on four sides, with paper lanterns swinging from the eaves.
Nobody could come within thirty paces without being seen.
Ju-won sat on the bench with his arm in its sling and looked at the water.
"You are going to tell me why that old man looked at me like that," he said.
"Yes."
"Is it bad?"
"It is the worst thing I know, and I am sorry for it."
Ye-han sat down on the bench beside him, and found he could not look at him.
He looked at his own hands, at the rings.
"Do you remember your mother?" he asked.
"Only a smell.
