Chapter 8: Hold Still While I Tape You

I never saw the fight, because Caspian put me inside his coat and kept me there.

I heard it.

A crack, a howl and Garrick Holt's voice saying "Back, back."

Then the wolves were gone, and the emerald was lying in the gravel with the headlights shining through it.

I picked it up with a shaking hand and put it in my pocket.

I did not remember the drive.

I remember the front door of the estate flying open under his boot.

His tail swung it shut behind us, and the motion lights blinked on.

They showed me how much blood he had lost.

"Put me down," I said. "Let me see the wound."

"It will heal," he said, and bent his head to my ear.

His tongue, hot and wet, followed the edge of it.

"I want you."

I gasped and turned my face away.

"Caspian, you're bleeding on my floor. I have a first aid kit in the kitchen and a sedative."

He pulled back.

For one second his green eyes were hurt, and then they were something darker and much more desperate.

"Don't," he said, hoarse. He pressed his forehead against mine. "Don't leave. My Carys. I love you."

He had not said that once since he woke up.

I did not have time to think about it, because he kissed me.

It was fierce and it was practiced, and his mouth knew exactly how I liked it.

My back arched against the door, and I stopped thinking about the first aid kit.

I got my hands into his hair and pulled his mouth harder onto mine.
